A School Around a Courtyard
This primary school is organized around a single central courtyard. Classrooms line three sides; the fourth opens to the surrounding neighborhood. Every room looks onto the courtyard, so children are always oriented and always visible. The plan is simple on purpose: a clear center, a clear edge, and circulation that loops without dead ends. Nothing in the layout needs explaining.
The building is low and long, built of brick and timber. Brick gives the school permanence and anchors it to the town; timber makes the interior warm and quiet. Corridors are daylit and wide enough to be used as teaching space. Windows sit low so children can see out, and high so light comes in without glare.
The Courtyard as the Heart

The courtyard is the school's social center. It holds assemblies, play, and quiet reading, and it brings daylight deep into every classroom. Because all rooms face it, it also works as wayfinding: children always know where they are. A single open space does more than a dozen signs could.
A Building Children Can Read

Schools should be legible to the people who use them. Here, the entrance is obvious, the routes are short, and the materials are honest. Brick outside, timber inside—children can see and touch what the building is made of. A school shapes how children understand the built world, and this one teaches clarity, light, and calm.
